Mr Anthony Perera

Consultant Specialist Foot and Ankle Surgeon

I graduated from Birmingham University Medical School and completed junior hospital posts in Birmingham and London. My orthopaedics training was based in the UK but included a period of trauma surgery in South Africa.

I then super-specialised in foot and ankle surgery by undertaking fellowships with the leaders in this field in Europe and the USA and was awarded the top prize by the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society in 2008 for this work.

This was a unique experience as the unit in the USA is world-leading and has set many of the standards in our field. They continue to pioneer the latest techniques and it was a privilege to be involved in some of these. Their training in complex and revision reconstruction especially sports injuries in elite athletes and ankle joint replacement is unmatched elsewhere. In Dublin I focussed on deformity correction especially forefoot surgery and I have been invited to lecture and publish my work on bunions around the world.

My NHS practice is at the University Hospital of Wales, performing specialist foot and ankle surgery for elective and emergency conditions. The biomechanical principles that I have been taught underpin my approach to managing these conditions enabling me to provide each patient with an individualised approach utilising the wide range of conservative or surgical techniques that are available. I continuously evaluate my work by maintaining a database for research and audit and frequently publish in foot and ankle surgery and medical law.
